How long have you been making collages?
I had my first exhibition in early 2015, but have been doing it all my life. The inside of my old closets in my childhood home are still plastered with cutouts, and when I started travelling with modelling, it became birthday cards and boxes for friends and family. From there it developed to a more professional level. I’m still learning and feel an immense proudness when I get to do a collaboration, like this one with Envii. Thank you, guys, for this opportunity.
What kind of DIY projects would you recommend during these Corona times?
I am never bored and right now my head is exploding with stuff to do. I’m undeniably a lover of the internet and all its time-consuming glory, but move away from the screens, and creativity will blossom. Start baking bread (I already baked a lot) and try out new dishes. Mend your old clothes - you know you have a pile you never got around to, while listening to a podcast. Actually, get creative with your sewing machine - I sometime sew on my collages. Redecorate your house - move stuff around or paint a wall. And your plants, give them some love and they will blossom with you.
What are the pros of handcrafting versus digital?
I’m a big believer that working with your hands inspires creative growth. It does for me. It’s meditative too and ideas starts bubbling, not just regarding new art work, but everything in my life. Everything can be done digitally, being able to do that is definitely a talent too, but in my work, there is only one version of the collage I create, and that is a uniqueness that’s increasingly harder to find in this digital age.
What would you recommend to people who want to start making collages?
We all have our own way of expressing ourselves and that can be expressed in any form; whether it’s drawings, ceramics or designing. I do my collages by looking through old books, mostly bought at the thrift stores, and magazines - I love old porn magazines. And then I start ripping out pages and spend quite a fair amount of time cutting things out, so you have a bunch to choose from. And then I start mixing it up, glue it, and voila, collages will start revealing themselves.
